About Helena, Montana

Helena is the state capital of the U.S. state of Montana and the county seat of Lewis and Clark County.

The city was originally founded as a gold town during the Montana gold rush in 1864. Within 2 decades, $3.6 billion of gold was extracted in the city limits, which made it one of the wealthiest cities in the United States during the 19th century. This level of wealth helped contribute to the city’s notable Victorian architecture.

According to a 2010 census, Helena’s population was 28,190, which made it the 5th least populated state capitals in the United States and the 6th most populated cities in the state of Montana. According to a 2015 census estimate, the Helena Micropolitan Statistical Area’s population, including all of Lewis and Clark and Jefferson counties, is 77,414.
